Biography

Born in Rome in 1953, Salvatore Puglia studied History. After working into the department of research in History, he started exhibiting installations in 1985 (at the Adeas Galery, Strasbourg). Since that time, his artistical activity was always linked to investigations on the documentary sources of images, according to a method which considers the historic traces as material worth to be transformed. « I first come across an image, either in a library or in the archives, which strikes me for no apparent reason. » This is Salvatore Puglia’s working genesis. Indeed, he steals images from the past and reproduces them while playing with the transparency of the supports. In extension to his exhibitions, Salvatore Puglia published into magazines, such as Quaderni storici, Détail, Linea d’ombra, Revue de Littérature Générale, Vacarme, Lo sciacallo, Mediamatic, Issues in Contemporary Culture and Aesthetics, Any. He also made a group publication : Via dalle immagini / Leaving Pictures (Salerne, 1999), and he curated exhibitions such as, Iconografie transitorie (Rome, 1999) and Memoria e storia (Naples, 2001). Salvatore Puglia works and lives in Nîmes, France.
